The conversation is not the only thing on a Docutrain chat page. Beside it, or beneath it on a phone, sits a set of document tools: curated topics, downloadable files, galleries, quizzes, guided forms, your own chat history.

One caveat first. The tool set is configurable per document. Most tools appear only when the administrator has enabled them and added the relevant content, so two documents from the same organization can show quite different strips. If a document has none, the tools area is simply absent.

Where the tools live

On a desktop screen the chat page shows a sidebar beside the conversation, holding the Cover image (a small arrow button collapses it, and your choice is remembered), the Introduction with a Show More / Show Less toggle, links to translated versions where the owner has connected them, and an Available tools: strip of labeled chips at the bottom. Clicking a chip opens that tool in a panel that slides in from the side and closes with Escape, its title-bar button, or a click on the darkened background. If the introduction lists sample questions, you can click one to ask it immediately.

On a phone there is no sidebar. The cover, title, and Introduction scroll away with the conversation, and the tools move into the composer as a Tools chip marked with a plus sign, next to a Settings chip. Tapping it opens a bottom sheet titled Document tools with a line such as 3 available, one row per tool with a one-line description — "Browse key themes", "Test your knowledge".

Inside a collection, desktop tools sit in the collection's own sidebar under each document's title, and in a multi-document chat each document's tools start folded behind an Available tools: row with a count. On a phone, a Docs & Tools button on the strip under the cover opens the document list and their tools.

Admins can rename the Files, gallery, and References labels, so one document may offer "Handouts" where another offers Files.

Ways into a document you have not read

Key Topics is the fastest. It ranks the document's most important topics, extracted automatically during processing, each with a rank number and a bar showing relative importance, under the hint "Ranked by importance · click to ask". Click one and the question is placed into the chat for you.

Recent Questions shows what other readers asked, newest first, with the time and sometimes a small country flag, updating live. Click one to ask it yourself: a saved answer that is still current is replayed immediately, but if the document has been retrained since, or the question came from Telegram, a fresh answer is generated. Duplicates are collapsed, questions the assistant could not answer are filtered out, and the tool appears only once at least two suitable questions exist. Administrators with the highest access level get a plus button on each entry, opening a Question Actions dialog with Pin Question and Delete Question; deleting removes it from the list without touching the conversation behind it.

Pinned Questions is the curated counterpart: a stable list of questions admins promoted, with an Unpin this question control for admins.

Abstract opens an AI-generated overview with the date it was produced and a footer offering Copy and Export as PDF; a notice marks it stale if the document has been retrained since. References is not the numbered citations under answers — it is an author-curated reading list shown as written, with addresses and DOIs turned into links. And a PubMed ID button, shown where the owner recorded an identifier, opens a popup with the article's details fetched from PubMed plus a View on PubMed link.

Your own history, and the owner's files

Signed-in readers get their conversation history back. My Chats on a document's tools strip opens a panel titled Prior Chats covering that document only; My Chats in the header menu's Account section covers every document. Both lists are private — nobody, including the owner, sees them there, and they never feed the public Recent Questions list.

Conversations are grouped into sessions, newest first, labelled with your opening question and a count such as 3 exchange(s), above a Search your conversations… box and All / Today / 7 days / 30 days date chips. Open a session and Continue this conversation loads it back into the chat, switching documents first if you came from the global drawer. A resumed conversation keeps the questions it already spent against its limit, so one that hit the cap asks you to start a New Chat. Delete this conversation and Delete all my chats with this document are immediate and irreversible.

The Files tool lists the owner's attachments under Available downloads with each file's type and size. PDFs open in a built-in viewer that slides over the chat; other types download directly, showing "Downloading..." or "Failed - Click to retry". The Image Gallery opens a full-screen lightbox with zoom, thumbnails, and a Downloads menu; the Video tool opens a full-screen player with a playlist. Both are covered in images and video.

Quiz, form, install, and the notice before you start

Quiz starts a multiple-choice quiz generated from the document's content — see quizzes. The Form tool, which owners can retitle, is a guided input form: what you enter is summarized near the chat box and included as context with every question, so answers are tailored to your situation. On some documents it arrives as a Before you chat wizard the first time you tap the input. See helpers and guided context.

Add to Home Screen, shown as Install in the compact chip strip, walks through Safari's own three steps and shows the name the shortcut will carry, noting when that name is too long for a home screen. It appears only in Safari on an iPhone or iPad — other iPhone browsers cannot install true home-screen apps — and disappears once the chat is installed.

Finally, the first time you open some documents in a session, a notice titled About this assistant explains that answers come only from the documents it was trained on, and that it will say when it does not know something rather than guess. Owners can customize that text or switch it off. Got it continues. It shows once per document per browser session, and never inside an embedded chat.

If a tool you expected is missing, the answer is almost always that the owner has not enabled it. The document settings tour shows the same switches from the other side.
